What the hell is Cozumel, and what is there to do there? Cozumel is a medium-sized Island off the coast of Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, located in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It is known for some of the best scuba diving in the world and its laid-back, picturesque beach vibes. Do you scuba? Do you like to soak up the sun while sipping margaritas & piña coladas? Do you like Mexican culture and hospitality? Do you like ATVs, boats, snorkeling, and exploring? You're in for a treat if you answered yes to ANY of these questions.
Cozumel is a common Mexican vacation destination, so it's easy to get to!
Flying into Cozumel: Grab a taxi from the airport to the hotel.
Flying into Cancun: You'll have to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen, then across the bay to the island. Be careful to time your arrivals and transfers to coordinate!
Cancun to Playa
ADO bus routes are safe, comfortable and affordable. They leave almost hourly from the Cancun airport. Choose the "tourista" destination to be closest to the ferry terminal. You can buy tickets ahead of time, or at the airport. Busses rarely sell out.
Private transfers are more expensive but also a good option. Consider Happy Shuttle Cancun or Cancun Transfer.
Playa to Cozumel
The wedding is next door to the Westin, and transportation to the main activities is arranged. If you want more flexibility, consider renting a scooter, buggy or car.
We recommend Daniel's Rentals or Fiesta Rentals.
Cozumel offers some of the best diving in North America (and honestly, the world)
Will we scuba dive? You try to tell Gabi no. Kidding, but yes, there will be plenty of Scuba diving. Most of the diving will be done in the days leading up to the main guest arrival. If you want to Scuba dive, I would recommend coming in at least a day or two early so we can hit it HARD.
Certifications: An open water certification is sufficient for most Cozumel Dives.
What if I am not Certified?
Google your local dive shop and get certified!
They offer "explore" dives for individuals looking for their first scuba experience. These typically require a ~ two-hour course before we take you to a shallow spot to give it a try.
Since Cozumel is a common vacation destination, you really only need pesos for tips and souvenirs.
Credit Cards: Accepted almost everywhere. Use this for meals, booking excursions, and other everyday purchases. Check with your bank to ensure you won't be charged international conversion fees. Most cards these days offer this.
Pesos: Tips, Souvineers, small food purchases like ice cream and tacos, roadside coconuts and beach massages.
Dollars: Ehhh...Talk to Jake if you have questions.
It's spooky Season Bi***
Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a Mexican tradition that commemorates the lives of deceased loved ones. Celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, it's a festive and joyful occasion where families honor their ancestors by creating altars, visiting graves, and enjoying traditional foods.
Both Cozumel and Playa Del Carmen offer events dedicated to Dia de los Muertos. We'll build this into our option agenda!
